Artist Statement
Polaroid gave our culture a unique view of the world through the medium and the immediacy. Polaroid emulates a dream world view with soft edges and unpredictable outcomes.
Instant photography did not end with the demise of Polaroid. Instax Wide from Fuji offers a similar experience.
Process Statement
Poem and polaroid monoprints are constructed of a poem typed by hand on Sekishu Shi paper with a manual typewriter and applied to cotton paper through the intaglio technique. Each of the polaroid images is printed on Sekishu Shi paper on an archival ink jet printer, cut by hand and applied to the paper in the same way as the poem. The editions are limited to ten, with two artist's proofs in most instances. Individual print sets are unique from one to another in the details.
Recent shows include large polaroid blow-ups on Sekishu She paper with handwritten poems in editions of 5.
Inspired by the unique and ethereal quality of Spectra polaroid film, Kate invites us to journey with her as armchair travelers through her book "Poems & Polaroids: I Journey With You Here." The milkiness, the painterly, almost ethereal look of the images and the poetic record of a place and time create what McBride describes as dreamscapes. Her photographic work integrates fully with her writing. Her work as a travel writer and filmmaker inspire both her polaroids and black and white imagery.
